The UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra is seeking a bass trombonist for a full-time permanent position. We offer the opportunity to work in a high-level professional big band that is one of the leading jazz orchestras in Europe. We are looking for a motivated and versatile musician with a strong interest in big band music. The position requires excellent skills on both bass trombone and tenor trombone, as well as readiness to improvise. However, in the audition evaluation, we will place emphasis on written excerpts and ensemble playing skills. The working language of the orchestra is Finnish; however, Finnish language skills are not required at the application stage. A sufficient level of English is required for the position. The application deadline is Sunday, 24 May 2026 at 23:59 (UTC+2). Applications must be submitted via Muvac. Based on the applications, selected candidates will be invited to the live audition. Invitations will be sent by 15 June 2026, and the audition materials will be provided at the same time. The audition will take place on Wednesday 23 September and Thursday 24 September 2026 at Kaapelitehdas (Avanti rehearsal hall, staircase B, 1st floor, Tallberginkatu 1, Helsinki, Finland). The audition consists of performing with and without a rhythm section, a sightreading (prima vista) task, and a possible interview in the final stage. The position-specific salary is €3,012.76 per month (effective from 1 January 2027), in accordance with the collective agreement for UMO musicians. In addition, possible experience-based increments and compensations for recordings, attire, and instruments are paid in accordance with the collective agreement. The position will begin on 1 January 2027 or as agreed. The position includes a six (6) month probationary period.
