Tokyo Opera Studio invites instrumentalists to a three-week opera orchestra residency in central Tokyo, 6–26 June 2027.
No tuition. No participation fee. This is an unpaid residency. Players cover their own travel. Optional housing is available through the program at $1,250 USD for a private single (plus 10% Japanese consumption tax). Independent housing is allowed.
Each player is assigned to one reduced opera orchestra of about 14–18, sitting in a mixed section with professional colleagues, and performs two fully staged operas from the 2027 season under international conductors:
Don Giovanni (Mozart)
Hänsel und Gretel (Humperdinck)
Cendrillon (Massenet)
L’enfant et les sortilèges (Ravel) & Gianni Schicchi (Puccini) Double bill
Both orchestras combine for a separate orchestral concert. The residency also includes instrumental masterclasses and organized cultural events and guided activities in Tokyo.
