Double bass: audition and classical music jobs

For many years, the string community promoted starting the double bass when a student was physically able to play a 1/2 size or larger bass. This encouraged many players to switch to the bass after starting on another stringed instrument, or it postponed their start. After many years of trying to improve this scenario, advocating good young-bassist training and making resources such as mini basses, bows and pedagogy more accessible so that younger students can start playing the bass.
And upon much observation and reflection on the development of students and the proliferation of resources to keep bass students on a progress par with other string players, we have come full circle and advocate beginning the bass when a student has a good grasp of intonation and bow technique on cello or violin.
Although the bass has historically been used in ensemble settings, modern playing standards and more ergonomic instrument designs allow it to be used equally well as a solo instrument.
Highly capable young-bassist teachers are few and far between, and properly set up mini-basses are not available everywhere, so, if you are in an area without a highly qualified young-bassist teacher, we advise beginning the cello with a very good teacher, perhaps switching to double bass when the child grows large enough for a 1/4 size bass.

If youre interested in becoming a double bass player, one of the first things to consider is how much education you need. Weve determined that 50.9% of double bass players have a bachelors degree. In terms of higher education levels, we found that 10.1% of double bass players have masters degrees. Even though most double bass players have a college degree, its possible to become one with only a high school degree or GED.

The double bass is a tough master โ€“ demanding strength, stamina and proper technique from its player. As the root of the orchestra, musical and rhythmic accuracy are imperative to the success of the whole โ€“ requiring plenty of practice and repetition.
Don't forget to include improv exercises in at least some of your practice sessions. You'll gain useful musical knowledge and find it simpler to switch between genres.
Of course, you have to practice well in order to develop the right techniques so, while regular practice matters, it matters even more that you prioritize practicing the fundamentals and proper techniques to become an accomplished double bass player.
Improvisation skills are important for all string musicians, but theyre especially important for an instrument like the double bass, which is used in multiple, varied genres of music.

The double bass, or contrabass as it is sometimes known, is the largest and lowest pitched bowed stringed instrument in a modern classical symphony orchestra. Together with violins, violas and cellos, the double bass is part of the string section and supports the orchestra with its warm, deep tone - but is also a popular instrument in jazz, blues, rock and roll, country, bluegrass, tango and folk music.
Like its smaller cousin, the cello, the bass generally has four strings, which can be played with a bow or plucked. However, the bass is the only stringed instrument tuned in fourths rather than fifths, with strings usually tuned (from the bottom up) to E, A, D and G.
